YANCEY COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA
The census records for 6/12/1850 Yancey Co, NC, pg 198 (hand written in corner), family & household 259/269: Hughs, Jeremiah, Sr, 65, VA; Jonathan, 4, NC; Nancy, 41, TN; Hannah, 15, NC; Stacy, 13, NC, Unfortunately the 1850 census reports don't give us the benefit of identifying the relationship.....I really hate that too. However, Jeremiah didn't have a daughter, Nancy, so one would assume she was his second wife and mother of Jonathan. Sophia w/Ester, Jeremiah Jr and William all listed in neighboring homes on same page. Nancy may have been deceased by 1860 when Jonathan, age 13, is listed in the home of his Sophia (Sulpia) Hughes [7/6/1860 Yancey Co, NC, pg 77, 501/501;mnHughes, Jonithan,13, NC, in home with sister, Sulphia Hughes [Brother, Jeremiah, 41 @ 502/502; William @ 504/504; Sisters; Stacy & Alford Wilson @ 502/502; Sarah, Leatherman & Andrew @ 505/505; Ester in home with son, David & Jeremiah @ 506/506]] . (Courtesy Delores Sue Willey)
William Hughes, son of Jeremiah Hughes and first wife?.
Estate papers on file in the NC Archives names his wife and children. At the time of his death he lived on Plum Branch, back in the mountains at the end of where the road is now. His land bordered Greenberry Silvers and a Wilson place. The land is described as being between Plum Branch and Doe Bag. There was about 100 acres and at least part of it was bought from Green B. Silvers.
Directions to cemetery from WPA survey: Turn 2/10 mile past Double Island Baptist Church. about 2 miles to a jeep trail to top of mountain.
1850 census, Yancey # 261, age 26. Living next door to Jeremiah jr.
1860 census, Yancey, Day Book # 504, age 36. Barbery Taylor, age 53, is in household.
1870 census, Yancey, Crabtree #46, age 46.
1880 census, Yancey, Crabtree #60, age 56.
Sulphia/Sophia/ Suffy Hughs (d/o Jeremiah Hughes Sr.) was born in 1817 & died after 1870. I have found her name in records sometimes spelled Sulphia and sometimes Sophia. In things relating to the family it was Suffy but evidently pronounced Sophie. As mentioned under Esther, Suffy was head of the house in 1850. Sophia was 33, daughter Nancy was 3. Her son John was 14. Esther and her two children (Jeremiah & David) were living with her. In the 1860 census of Yancey, Day Book twp., Suffy was 42 and head of the house. She had two children with her; Nancy 14 & Jonathon 13. This 13 year old Jonathon almost has to be Sophia’s brother. Her son was 14 in 1850, so it couldn’t be him. He is already married in the 1860 census of Yancey to Nancy ____.. Sophia’s brother Jonathon was 4 in the 1850 census. It has to be her brother. Her sister Susannah who married Jackson Briggs lived on one side of her, and sister Stacey who married Alfred Wilson on the other side. Suffy made her last appearance in the records in the 1870 census of Yancey. In that census she was living on Jacks Creek (in Yancey County) with her son Jonathon “John” who was 34, and his daughter Mary E. 8. Suffy never married but had at least two children; Nancy & John. Nancy does not appear after the 1860 census of Yancey. I don’t know if she died or married but I couldn’t identify her after that. (Courtesy Peggy Silvers)
